Manage an Elastic Pool as a Pool Leader

The Autonomous Database instance that creates an elastic pool is the pool leader. A pool leader can perform the following operations on an elastic pool.

Change an Elastic Pool Shape

Only a pool leader can change the elastic pool shape for an existing elastic pool.

To change the shape of an elastic pool (update the pool size):

  1. Go to the Details page of the Autonomous Database that is a pool leader.
  2. On the Autonomous Database Details page, select Manage resource allocation.
  3. Click Show advanced options.
  4. In the Elastic pool section, select a value that is different than the current value for the Pool ECPU count field.
    Note

    By default each instance in an elastic pool is automatically assigned a maintenance window. By selecting a Pool ECPU count greater than 1024, you have an option of assigning a custom 2-hour maintenance window during which the leader and all elastic pool members are patched together. To select a custom maintenance window for your elastic pool, file a Service Request at Oracle Cloud Support. See Create a Service Request in My Oracle Support for guidance.
  5. Click Apply.
The Lifecycle state changes to UPDATING. The changes apply immediately after the Lifecycle state changes to Available.
Note

Decreasing the CPU allocation, Pool ECPU count, to a value that cannot accommodate all the members of the elastic pool is not allowed.

For example, for an elastic pool with a Pool ECPU count of 256 ECPUs and a pool capacity of 1024 ECPUs: If the elastic pool contains eight (8) Autonomous Database instances with 80 ECPUs each for a total of 640 ECPUs, the elastic pool leader cannot decrease the Pool ECPU count to 128 ECPUs. In this case, if the pool size were reduced to 128 ECPUs, the pool capacity would be 512 ECPUs, which is less than the total allocation for the pool members (640 ECPUs).

List Elastic Pool Members

Follow these steps to list the members of an elastic pool:
  1. Go to the Details page of the Autonomous Database that is a pool leader.
  2. On the Autonomous Database Details page, under Resources, click Elastic pool members.
    This shows the Elastic pool members section, with a list showing details for each instance that is an elastic pool member.
  3. If you click the ellipses (three vertical dots) at the end of a row in the list, you can select an action to perform for the member. The possible actions are:
    • View details: Shows the member's Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Console.
    • Copy OCID: Copies the member's Autonomous Database instance OCID.
    • Remove from pool: Brings up a dialog where you can confirm to remove the Autonomous Database instance from the pool.

Remove an Elastic Pool Member

Follow these steps to remove an elastic pool member, as a pool leader:
  1. Go to the Details page of the Autonomous Database that is a pool leader.
  2. On the Autonomous Database Details page, under Resources, click Elastic pool members.
    This shows the Elastic pool members section, with a list showing details for each instance that is an elastic pool member.
  3. Click the ellipses (three vertical dots) at the end of the row for an instance you want to remove, and select Remove from pool from the drop-down list.
    This shows the Remove from pool confirmation dialog.
  4. Click Leave to confirm.
The Lifecycle state changes to UPDATING. The changes apply immediately after the Lifecycle state changes to Available.

Terminate an Elastic Pool

Only the pool leader can terminate an elastic pool.
Note

Terminating an elastic pool is only allowed when there are no pool members in the elastic pool.
To terminate an elastic pool:
  1. Go to the Details page of the Autonomous Database that is a pool leader.
  2. On the Autonomous Database Details page, select Manage resource allocation.
  3. Click Show advanced options.
  4. In the Elastic pool section, select the Terminate pool check-box.
  5. Click Apply.
The Lifecycle state changes to UPDATING. The changes apply immediately after the Lifecycle state changes to Available.
