Completing the Edge Platform Software Initial Setup and Configuration

The Roving Edge initial platform configuration wizard creates an administrator account, binds the system to your Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environment, and configures network connections for the appliance. When the initialization process is complete, the cloud services come online and you can begin to build your cloud.

We recommend that you prepare the network resources for Roving Edge device installation together with your on-premises network administrator. See Network Resource Planning.

The Service CLI is the preferred method to perform the initial configuration procedure. The GUI could be used as a secondary option.

Operating Modes

The relationship between Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and the OCI compatible compute infrastructure installed on the edge of the cloud is defined by the system operating mode. The parameters for the operating mode are locked in during the first few steps of the initial system setup. These don't provide installation choices; each type of edge cloud system has its specific combination of operating mode parameters.

  • Link to OCI

    When a system is linked to OCI, it's represented in the home OCI tenancy by an infrastructure resource. Linked infrastructures enable standard OCI billing and cost management using Universal Credits, even if they're not connected to OCI, or air-gapped.

    Systems not linked to OCI operate in standalone mode. They are not associated with a home OCI tenancy, and all infrastructure and resource management is performed locally.

  • Connection Mode

    A system linked to a home OCI tenancy can be configured to operate in connected or disconnected mode. The connection mode refers to the presence of an active network connection between OCI and the system, which must be enabled or disabled during initial setup.

  • IAM Data Source

    Identity and access management (IAM) happens either locally on the system or within the home OCI tenancy. On systems using OCI as the IAM data source, the configuration is synchronized with OCI at regular intervals.
